About the conference


A year on, after unveiling the 2017 – 2021 regional plans, we are taking the opportunity to invite clubs to discover and discuss good practice within the region. At this conference clubs, the RYA and partners will be sharing the latest insights obtained though research, pilot projects & club development examples. A suite of workshops will be provided focusing on the key areas highlighted in the regional plans, so you can choose the support your club needs. This event is perfect for committee members with the opportunity to meet other clubs in your region.

Pre-booking is essential and we would like to encourage at least two people from your organisation and if possible at least one of these who is new to our conference and agenda items.  If you would like more than two people to attend from your club please email Steve Mitchell to confirm available capacity.  We thank you in advanced for your support here. Places for this conference are free with lunch and refreshments also provided at no cost. Due to limited capacity we recommend that you book your places early to avoid disappointment. This session will focus on how clubs and the RYA are finding and training coaches and instructors. We will share best practices from other clubs, what support the RYA can offer and assist you in developing a coach/instructor development plan.

An update on the recent General Data Protection Regulations. Lessons learned so far, keeping yourself compliant and maintaining standards.
Keeping older members active for longer.
When people find it harder to keep sailing as they get older, what can clubs do to keep the lifeblood of many clubs involved for longer. Explore innovative ways different clubs and groups are keeping people sailing.

RYA Training Recognition for your club.  Becoming a Training Centre; including instructor development. (Small boat scheme, Shorebased & Cruising)
How to engage your female members to increase participation at your club.
Women on Water style projects have been a huge success in many clubs across the country, increasing club activity as a result. Find out some of the keys to success, from those that have been there and done it. This session is not solely about creating female only opportunities. By challenging the traditional barriers women face when looking to take part in our sport, evidence shows that participation across the genders can increase.
How to improve your club members’ satisfaction to keep them coming back
We’ll be using the Club Members Satisfaction Survey outcomes to explore themes and trends across different groups of members. We’ll discuss what clubs can do to improve and decide on possible actions for your club.
Reaching new members with Facebook post boosting
Boosting a Facebook post is an effective way to grow attendance and increase retention from open days and Start Sailing courses.  We will explore how to create a good post and use free and paid for boosting. Delivered by our social media partners SocialB.
Running environmentally sustainable clubs and events
Discover and share best practice from what is happening in the region. With plastic waste and our impact on the environment high on the agenda, this workshop provides the opportunity to discuss what your club and its events can do to safeguard its local waters & wildlife for future boaters.

RYA Racing Services: Resources to Support your Club Racing
Meet the volunteer and staff team who look after Racing Services. Have you ever wanted advice on writing race documents and running races? Do you know who to ask about the racing rules and how to settle disputes? Have you ever wondered “why is my handicap always wrong?''. Through video case studies and testimonials find out more about what is on offer and how this may help you deliver the best possible racing for your members.
What is a RYA British Youth Sailing Recognised Club and how to get involved
The RYA works in partnership with sailing clubs through the British Youth Sailing (BYS) Recognised Club programme to help them establish or enhance their junior race training. Find out more about the programme and how your club could apply to become a RYA British Youth Sailing Recognised Club.

Disability Awareness
Your club will have disabled members whether they use that label or not. 1 in 5 people have a disability or are living with a long term condition. The RYA's new Disability Awareness Course gives you a set of principles and frameworks you can use to ensure disabled members feel welcome, get their needs met and are able to participate. Using scenarios to explore the issues, this workshop is discussion based and focuses on the importance of engaging with people, listening, adapting what you offer and learning from how it goes.
Introducing a paid instructor model to grow activity
Looking at how paying for instructors to fulfil demand can in itself create more demand, generate revenue to facilitate training activities, and grow club membership whilst increasing existing members satisfaction.

Increase members' activity and membership renewals by communicating more effectively online
Communicating effectively is one of the keys to engaging with your membership. The challenge is that different groups of members want different information delivered to them in different ways.  This workshop will explore case studies of clubs that have successfully used digital channels, including email and text, to increase activity.   Delivered by our social media partners SocialB.

Attracting sailing`s future customers
Following on from the key note presentation, this workshop will delve deeper into some of the customer insights and the developing consumer, participation and social trends. We will aslo be sharing good parctice and looking at and how some clubs are already diversifying in order to maximise these future opportunities.
