RYA North West Affiliated Clubs Conference 2019
Sunday 1st December 2019
The Anderton Centre, New Road, Chorley, PR6 9HG

About the conference

The day is a fantastic opportunity for you to meet and network with other clubs, share ideas and success stories and discuss the current issues that are having an impact, both in clubs and the sport more widely. Places for this conference are free with lunch and refreshments provided at no cost. Due to limited capacity pre-booking is essential, so get in early to avoid disappointment.

This year's conferences are about 'Putting people first'. That means understanding what your members, volunteers and new sailors need, and putting that at the forefront of your decision making. Whether you want to grow your membership, increase your volunteer base, develop your instructors and race coaches or simply get better at retaining members of all ages, interests and abilities, you will leave with the ideas and information you need to make it happen.

The events include regional updates, guest speakers, and a suite of workshops and update sessions focusing on the key areas of your region's RYA Regional Plan, plus time for plenty of networking to ensure you get as much out of your day as possible. Find out too about the latest volunteer research the RYA has been conducting, as well as hearing lots of interesting case studies from clubs like yours.

Take a look at the conference agenda for the full range of workshops and speakers. This event is perfect for committee members, and we would love to see at least two people from each club come along. It would also be great if one of your club contingent could be an Affiliated Clubs Conference first-timer. If you would like more than four people from your club to attend please email Adam McGovern to confirm availability.

The day will be hosted by your Regional Development Officer, Adam McGovern and if you have any questions about the event please do not hesitate to drop them an email to adam.mcgovern@rya.org.uk

We look forward to seeing you!

Round 1
Please select one for your first session 11:30-12:30
An exploration of the balance around professionalism vs maintaining a strong volunteer ethos.
This session will focus on how developing partnerships with local groups can benefit the club. We will explore what some of the benefits can be including increasing club membership, sailing participation and volunteering.
Women on Water style projects have been a huge success in many clubs across the country, increasing club activity as a result. Find out some of the keys to success, from those that have been there and done it. This session is not solely about creating female only opportunities. By challenging the traditional barriers women face when looking to take part in our sport, evidence shows that participation across the genders can increase.
This interactive session will look at how the RYA’s Racing Services Team can help your people to deliver the racing your members want.
• Race management – how to get the most from your club racing week in, week out
• Rules advisors – how to deal with rules disputes and ensuring racing is fair and fun
• Handicapping – a look at how to get the most from the RYA’s PY & NHC schemes to support better club racing
• Measurement & Equipment Inspection – how to ensure everyone is on an even playing field
• Racing Formats – what options are there for different formats
Round 2
Please select one for your second session 13:30-14:30
The RYA is committed on behalf of its members, to addressing environmental concerns and to helping recreational boating contribute to sustainability. This interactive workshop will begin with a brief presentation on the latest science and government policies, and what they mean for the future. We will then go on to discuss how individuals and clubs can best plan to address sustainability issues and have the greatest impact for the least cost.
We know from the recent Futures research that there have and will be changes to the demands and expectations of a club environment. This workshop will explore how some clubs are trialling projects and adapting their offer to meet these changing needs.
The legalities of volunteering, contracting and employing people.
This session will highlight focus on the development opportunities the RYA offer for coaches and instructors and sharing how clubs and centres develop their coaches and instructors
Round 3
Please select one for your third session 15:00-16:30
Attracting and retaining non-sailing families can be challenging. In this session we will explore what we can do to support this important group.
A look at the resources available to clubs that can result in time-saving and a reduction in volunteering hours.
A chance to identify the key components of a successful junior club and discover what support is available for junior club coordinators.
